Description

Designed for 48+ players, Codenames: Back to Hogwarts is the first competitive, house-vs-house Codenames game inspired by the Wizarding World. It puts a fresh spin on the classic Codenames word association gameplay, while offering thematic new mechanics to change up the gameplay for both longtime fans and new players alike.

As new first-year students at Hogwarts, players will be sorted into two rival houses, each with their own prefect who knows the secrets of the fabled schools mystery card grid. On their turn, prefects give their team of students a clue consisting of a single word and a number suggesting how many cards are associated with that word. Students must then follow these clues to explore Hogwarts by guessing the corresponding words and revealing one card at a time.

If theyre correct, they can keep guessing words up to the stated number of times. If they encounter a card for the rival house, a dead end, locked door, or other obstacle, theyll end their turn. Take care not to get caught by groundskeeper Argus Filch, however, as that ends the game and marks a win for the rival house. Every win also earns points for their house, which can be tracked across multiple play sessions in the House Cup.

Beneath the surface, this should sound very familiar to existing fans of Codenamesat least mechanically. Codenames: Back to Hogwarts also adds new layers of strategic depth onto the classic Codenames gameplay in the form of unique asymmetrical abilities.

Each house has access to two powerful and distinct special abilities. These abilities have been designed to meaningfully transform the fundamentals of Codenames, providing both muggles and wizards with some surprising new gameplay possibilities. Because each game features two different houses, and each house will use only one of its two abilities, there are a multitude of possible combinations for players to explore and play!

Contains:

  • 198 double-sided word & picture cards
  • 72 maps
  • 1 stand
  • 9 House tiles in each of the four colors
  • 1 Sorting Hat token
  • 6 locked door tiles
  • 1 Argus Filch tile
  • 4 ability cards
  • 8 herbology cards
  • 8 different House-specific tokens

We put a cooperative spin on the classic game! Now with a revised word list, beautiful art, a brand-new insert that keeps your game neatly organized, and a streamlined rulebook that makes it easier to teach and learn the game.

In Codenames Duet, you’re no longer competing you’re teaming up with a fellow operative (or operatives in a group game) for an exciting cooperative experience. The mission? Work together to find all your secret agents hidden among a grid of mysterious codenames. The twist? You each see part of the key and neither of you has the full picture. Codenames: Duet is perfect to enjoy with only two players, but you can also play it with more friends, if you’d like a less competitive experience than in the basic Codenames.

Heres how the game works: Lay out 25 word cards in a 55 grid. Between you is a shared key card each half of the team sees one side. On your side, nine words mark your agents, three mark deadly assassins, and the rest are innocent bystanders.

Youll take turns giving one-word clues paired with a number, pointing the operative(s) across from you to specific words on the grid. Guess right? Keep going. Guess a bystander? Your turn ends. Guess an assassin? Mission failed game over. But as long as your guesses are correct, you can keep going, even revisiting past clues.

The game is played over a series of 9 turns, but can be increased to 11 turns for operatives who may need a little more time as they improve their skills.

Your goal: Find all 15 agents without triggering an assassin before you run out of time!

The game includes 400 new words that can be combined with those from standard Codenames.
